This week marks the 150th anniversary of the epic struggle at Gettysburg, arguably the single most important event in the preservation of our country to be observed when remembering veterans.
Today, a visit to Gettysburg reminded me of the shared sacrifice of Veterans through the generations. The heartbreaking inspiration that comes from standing in the fields where thousands of Veterans answered their final call to service is an essential part of the American experience.
We are as Veterans, each of us, part of the fierce, magnificent congregation that first lit freedom’s flame and have then been called upon to constantly shelter it from history’s strongest tempests. No one in history has performed so sacred a mission so well and so long as the generations of Veterans who have answered the call.
