As I sit and type this, the closing ceremonies for the Rio Summer Olympics are in full swing. The Olympic flame has been extinguished, the torch has been passed from the mayor of Rio to the Governor of Tokyo.
The records have been set, the medals awarded, and the crowds have largely gone home. In spite of the massive medals haul for the United States, Great Britain, and others the real champion of the games this year has been the host nation. Against incredibly long odds, in the face of nearly constant criticism, and amid dire forecasts of certain failure, the city of Rio and the country of Brazil excelled.
Americans love the underdog, and in hosting such a beautiful, joyful, and peaceful gathering of nations, Brazil has earned a place among Olympic legends.
Thank you, Rio. Godspeed, Tokyo.
